David moved from Oregon to Santa Cruz California in 1990 and started playing traditional music in local sessions at the tender age of 13. He is still a regular session attendee even
though his age is not as tender as it used to be!
His main instrument of interest, Scottish bagpipes, has led him to Scotland on several occasions to study with pipers Hamish Moore, Fred Morrison, Anna Murray, Alan Macdonald, and Rory Campbell. In various mad fits of enthusiasm over the years, David has learned to play the whistle, bodhran, mandolin, and guitar. These fits of enthusiasm were kept under control with coffee, which in turn led to the title of his 1998 solo album, The Java Jacket. David's passion for collecting things has spurred his interest in acquiring not only various forms of bagpipes (Highland, Border, small, and uillean) but also a passion for tegestology, and he currently owns close to 1000 unique tegestological pieces. I'm sure you will agree, a very impressive achievement! Not content with playing music, collecting musical instruments and tegestological items, David is also a prolific writer of tunes. Amongst his more unusual efforts is a collection of around 100 tunes all written in the time signature of 7/8, remiscent of the playing of drunken Balkan musicians, or of the manoeuvers of three-legged dogs attempting to relieve themselves on fire hydrants. Molly's Revenge has not yet recorded any of these tunes because we fear that we may be sued by people who believe that our CD may have caused damage to their CD player. David makes his living by teaching students how to play whistles and/or bagpipes, performing as a solo piper, and as a member of some local bands, the most impressive of which is, of course, Molly's Revenge. He is currently studying toward a degree in music at Cabrillo College. Send David an email |
