"There is an engaging freshness and yet an impressive maturity in their playing. There is also a lovely balance of repertoire, alternating a familiar with a most arcane selection of tunes and songs. All are beautifully and tastefully arranged. The production by John Doyle is predictably first rate. Great vocals by guest singer Moira Smiley complement excellent musicianship by band members... this is a thoroughly enjoyable addition to the rich and varied world of Irish music in America. Already looking forward to the next one!"
Mick Moloney, National Heritage Award recipient
Their live performances are marked by joyful energy and imaginative playing, qualities that appealed to John Doyle, who produced this album... They have a richly hybrid sound, a kind of Scottish-Irish mash-up. This bunch of out-of-the-closet musicologists are a great bet for a seriously joyous, masterly musical experience. Revered in California as one of its most energetic, exciting and innovative bands, Mollys Revenge has a produced an album that is a total joy. The tunes and songs are exciting and incendiary, yet still possess a softness of tone that leaves one breathless. Moira Smileys songs are captivating, holding the listener enchanted with their telling, and her rich voice captures the essence of great traditional singing. The deft and skillful hand of John Doyle lends much to the music, giving it precision and drive while emphasizing the bands innate musicality, undoubtedly making The Western Shore a world class album. Shay Black of the legendary Black family
They bring to the music a vital and joyous creativity that excites even the hardest of hearts... This recording showcases the confidence and enthusiasm in their playing and their maturity as a group. Their diligence to the tradition has produced this fine collection of material old and new which fans of Celtic music are sure to embrace. John Doyle, founding member of Solas
For Yuledance: A Celtic Christmas Celebration, the guys are joined by vocalist/harpist Jesse Autumn, whose unbelievably fragile voice and gentle harp nicely balance the manly men on their high-energy instrumentals. Yuledance bursts with Celtic charm and enthusiastic professionalism... I have always loved the delicate Lo How a Rose Eer Blooming, and the piece is perhaps my favorite on the album. Jesse Autumns heartbreakingly beautiful vocal will bring tears to your eyes; she is also rapturous on Drive Sorrows Away and Silent Night. Carol Swanson, christmasreviews.com
The instruments are traditional... but the wild passion they exhibit is thoroughly modern. MetroSantaCruz (CA)
The revenge to which they refer in their cryptic name is what I tend to think of as traddiction, or an inability to be temperate with ones desire to play Just One More Set of Tunes Before Going Home... The arrangements are lovely, full-bodied and well-conceived. They use driving syncopation, dovetailing leads, and flying meter changes all to beautiful advantage. Brooke Alberts, Folkworks (CA)
Mollys Revenge indulges in little in the way of morose balladry, instead celebrating life, community and the sheer joy of playing... Amidst the skirling pipes and thumping bodhrans, its that session spirit of gathering that gives the music such a powerful pull. Pasadena Weekly (CA)
Mollys Revenge transcend the Celtic label with unspeakably beautiful folk music... leaving listeners in awe with wind-swept, evocative landscapes. For example, as soon as you hear David Brewers title cut, youre already transported to the vast, open fields of Scotland. Carson James, Twangtown
Nothing but sheer delight, enthusiasm, and joy on the entire album... the band was clearly having one hell of a good time. Corvallis (OR) Gazette-Times
Mollys Revenge operates at a higher voltage than most Celtic bands these days. (They are) launching Celtic music into the new century with equal parts hot chops and exuberance. Danny Carnahan (producer, musician, author)
